The Valley Breeze: Places to donate during this season of giving

  • The Smithfield Police Department is once again teaming up with the merchants of The Crossing at Smithfield. The department is seeking new and unwrapped toys, clothing and gift cards for needy children until Friday, Dec. 12. Visit the participating merchants at the Crossing or simply drop off the gifts at the Smithfield Police Department. In addition to the collection bins located at participating merchants of The Crossing at Smithfield we will be collecting new and unwrapped toys, clothing and gift cards at the Christmas tree lighting on Friday, Dec. 6, at 6 p.m.
  • The Holy Name Society will hold its annual toy drive through Dec. 17. Donations of new unwrapped toys can be placed in the decorated boxes at the entrances of St. Anthony Church, 1413 Mineral Spring Ave., North Providence and the Church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 1081 Mineral Spring Ave., North Providence.
  • YWCA Rhode Island, 514 Blackstone St., Woonsocket, will be collecting new mittens, gloves, hats, scarfs and other warm clothing, from Dec. 3 to Jan. 6, on a Mitten Tree. Donations will warm the hearts and hands of children in need this winter. Anyone in need of these items is welcome to take them. Donations can be brought to the front desk. Contributors are asked to leave labels/tags on for information regarding clothing materials and sizes. For more information, call 401-769-7450.
  • Woonsocket Adopt-A-Family solicits donors to “adopt” the wish list of a needy child from Woonsocket. Donors may purchase clothing items, toys and a stuffed stocking. Wrapped donations must be delivered to the Donation Center at the Elks Lodge, 380 Social St., Woonsocket. Donor drop-off schedule: Sunday, open drop from 6 to 7 p.m.; Monday, Dec. 11, family numbers 1-375; Tuesday, Dec. 12, family numbers 376-750; Wednesday, Dec. 13, family numbers 751-1000+. Monday-Wednesday drop-off hours are 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help process the gifts Dec. 11-14, at the Elk's Hall. Time slots are available in 4-hour increments, Monday-Thursday, by using the link at www.woonsocketadoptafamily.org.
