About the Zoning Atlas

Rhode Island joins a growing list of states, regions, and metros across the country that have released a zoning atlas according to the NZA methodology.

As the Rhode Island team of the National Zoning Atlas (NZA) collaborative, HousingWorks RI began compiling and analyzing zoning data in early 2022, completing the RI Zoning Atlas in October of 2023.

Though the release of the RI Zoning Atlas represents the culmination of almost two years of work, HousingWorks RI recognizes that the RI Zoning Atlas is a living and breathing tool. HWRI plans to expand upon its zoning research by integrating more RI-specific data sources and layers, adding important context to existing zoning conditions, as well as identifying areas of opportunity.

In the coming months, HWRI will also be hosting a series of Lunch and Learns on the RI Zoning Atlas. These events will help enable stakeholders to effectively utilize the Zoning Atlas, as well as elicit ideas for further research that can enhance the tool.
