Anthony Maione will retire as president and CEO of United Way of Rhode Island, effective Dec. 31, 2018, the agency announced in a news release on Wednesday.

Maione has led United Way of Rhode Island since January 2005, shepherding the agency through the 2008 recession and heading fundraising efforts totaling more than $170 million.

“With Tony's leadership, United Way has taken on a major role in solving important community issues,” said the agency's board president, Sandra J. Pattie, president and CEO of BankNewport. “United Way has initiated programs and policies to reduce homelessness, increase affordable housing, improve workforce training and develop high quality pre-kindergarten, afterschool and summer learning programs.”
