ProJo: Mark Patinkin: Every homeless person has a story to tell

We drive past them often — those seeking handouts from cars on corners. I can't deny I usually keep going.

But I got to wondering who they were. So I parked by Branch and North Main in Providence, where two people with signs were on either side of the intersection.

One, who allowed a photo but preferred only his first name, Mark, had a sign saying, “Homeless, Anything Helps. What would Jesus do?”

Mark said he's 46 and sleeps outside.

“Any hole in the wall,” he told me.

The police don't bother him?

“They're cool about it,” said Mark. “They treat us good, you know. Like humans.”
