ProJo: Former state Rep. Regunberg hired as adviser to Providence Mayor Elorza
PROVIDENCE — While holding the door open to another run for state office in 2022, former Rep. Aaron Regunberg, the high-profile progressive who ran for lieutenant governor last year, is starting work Monday as a top-level policy adviser to Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza on universal pre-kindergarten and affordable housing initiatives.
“Aaron has proved a committed advocate for critical issues impacting folks throughout Providence and the entire State of Rhode Island,” Elorza said in a statement announcing the hiring for the newly created job. “I look forward to working with Aaron as we develop progressive and inclusive policies that make Providence a city that works for and invests in every single resident.”
In an interview, Regunberg laid out his post-General Assembly plans and, in addition to his new $80,000-a-year City Hall job, they include enrollment next fall at Harvard Law School. At that point, he anticipates moving into a more part-time role with the city. (His wife, Katie Cielinski, is a Harvard Law School graduate currently working as a public defender in Fall River.)
