The resolution Wednesday calls on the city administration to encourage the purchaser of the former Cranston-Calvert School to develop “legally permissible advertising and marketing programs that would attract rentals by young people who work or plan to work in Newport.”
NEWPORT — The City Council split 4-3 in passing a resolution Wednesday night that calls on the city administration to encourage the purchaser of the former Cranston-Calvert School to develop “legally permissible advertising and marketing programs that would attract rentals by young people who work or plan to work in Newport."
This was a revision of an ordinance sponsored by Mayor Jamie Bova and Councilman Justin McLaughlin two weeks ago that ran into opposition and did not win majority approval. The initial ordinance called for the preference for young people to be “incorporated into the closing documents language” when the sale takes place.
Councilwoman Kathryn Leonard argued at that time the resolution would encourage action that could be a violation of the Rhode Island Fair Housing Practices Act, if young people were to be selected over other age groups to occupy new apartments in the former school.
