**MEDIA ADVISORY**

The People's Tax Policy Summit and Gubernatorial Candidate Reception is Today

WHAT: Costs are rising, and the choices we make now will shape Rhode Island’s future. Join the Economic Progress Institute (EPI) and partners for The People’s Tax Policy Summit & Gubernatorial Candidates Reception, an evening to learn, connect, and help shape the conversation around tax policy and economic justice in Rhode Island. Participants will learn the history of tax policy in Rhode Island and what’s at stake today, help build the agenda together, and meet gubernatorial candidates to ask questions directly.

WHEN: Wednesday, May 20, 2026 5-8:30PM (Candidates Reception to begin at 7PM)

WHERE: Tilden Thurber Ballroom at The Hotel Providence, 139 Matthewson St., Providence

WHY: The high cost of living continues to top Americans’ list of the most important financial problems facing their families – and Rhode Island in no exception. Groceries. Energy Costs. Gas for our cars. Housing costs. Healthcare. Rhode Island lawmakers are considering altering the state tax structure to help bring in more revenue and reduce costs for residents. It is imperative to understand the history of tax policy and RI’s current and potential outgoing financial state to make the right decisions for all. Having everyone at the table is also critical. This summit gives the opportunity for the people – seniors, teachers, essential workers, micro-business owners, and community members to share their ideas with state leadership and lawmakers. Attendees will also be able to hear from and speak directly to the Gubernatorial candidates at a reception that will follow the summit.

WHO: This event is hosted by the following organization and coalitions: Alliance of Rhode Island Southeast Asians for Education (ARISE), Cranston Forward, Economic Progress Institute, HousingWorks RI, Latino Policy Institute, Protect Our Healthcare Coalition, Revenue for Rhode Islanders Coalition, Rhode Island Food Policy Council, Rhode Island for Community & Justice, Rhode Island Interfaith Coalition to Reduce Poverty, Rhode Island KIDS COUNT, Rhode Island Working Families Power and the Workforce Alliance.
