Rep. Nydia Velazquez wants to set an example.
The New York Democrat was set to roll out an ambitious public housing bill Wednesday that would pump more than $30 billion into NYCHA's depleted coffers — but she admits the measure is unlikely to make a splash on Capitol Hill.
Instead, Velazquez, who represents parts of Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan, says she wants the legislation to start a conversation and send a message to Republicans and the Trump administration that public housing is in “a state of crisis,” especially in the five boroughs.
“We must start somewhere and that means putting pen to paper, specifying how much is needed and introducing a bill that Congress, activists and others can coalesce behind,” Velazquez told the Daily News before a press conference at the Alfred E. Smith Houses in downtown Manhattan, where she was set to officially announce the measure with other Big Apple lawmakers Wednesday morning.
