Housing Needs of Northeast RI
The Northeast Region is one of the few regions that has a near equal balance of owner-occupied and renter households. Despite this relative balance, the projected housing need from the 2016 Projecting Future Housing Needs Report is exclusively for more multifamily housing. Fifty percent of the renters in the region are considered cost burdened, or pay more than 30 percent of their income toward housing costs. Forty-five percent of the region’s households, or 34,595, fall below 80 percent of area median income. Similar to most of the other regions, the significant majority of household growth is projected to be households aged 65 and older.
