  A developer hoping to convert the former Cranston-Calvert school into an apartment building that is affordable for working young professionals received some positive action by the Planning Board on Monday night.

  About half of all Providence high school students missed 18 days of school or more last year. In some schools, those rates were even higher. At Hope and Central high schools, for example, about 63% of kids were absent at least 18 days, or 10 percent of the 180-day school year. With Providence schools now under control of the state, officials say improving the attendance of students in the city has to be a priority.

• The Block Island Times: Four apartments proposed for Harbor Church

  The Harbor Church is seeking Town approval to convert the unused third floor of its Water Street building into four one-bedroom apartments to be rented year-round at “below-market” rates. If completed as proposed, the new apartments would be counted toward the Town’s state-mandated quota of affordable housing units.

  A former rectory once owned by the nonprofit Whitmarsh House has been sold to a Providence investment corporation, which wants to renovate and convert it to apartments.

• NLIHC: New Report Published Today: Shortage of 7 Million Apartments for the Nation’s Lowest-Income Renters

  NLIHC released today its annual report, The Gap: A Shortage of Affordable Homes, which finds a shortage of seven million affordable and available rental homes for extremely low-income renters, those with household incomes at or below the poverty level or 30% of their area median income.
