ProJo: Study: COVID-19 is silent threat for R.I.’s homeless

In a first-of-its-kind study of the disease among R.I.’s homeless population, 12% of residents in five Providence-area shelters tested positive in April, and 80% of those positive cases had no symptoms. Authors of the study say the findings have ramifications not just for people experiencing homelessness, but for society at large.

 Almost 12% of residents of five Providence-area homeless shelters tested positive for COVID-19 over the course of five days in April, according to a preliminary study.

 The testing of 299 residents shows just how difficult the disease is to detect before it gets into a shelter, and to control after it does.
