ProJo: Advocates seek to keep Barbara Jordan II affordable

PROVIDENCE — Advocates for low-income residents rallied outside the vacant Barbara Jordan II housing complex in South Providence on Thursday to voice their demands for its redevelopment.

“What we’re looking for is to maintain the buildings and layout as it is and restore all 74 apartments to quality, [and make them] affordable for folks in the neighborhood who make $20,000 per year or less,” said Malchus Mills, vice chairman of Direct Action for Rights and Equality, an organization advocating for low-income residents of Providence.

Barbara Jordan II has been vacant for over two years since it fell into deplorable conditions and was foreclosed upon by the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.
