Enterprise: Community Developments: Enterprise Submits Comments on the Implementation of Opportunity Zones

  • A new report by The Brookings Institution, Housing as a Hub for Health, Community Services, and Upward Mobility, explores the ways housing affects the lives and success of individuals in different segments of the population. The report explores factors and policies that limit the capacity of housing to serve as a hub for community well-being. The authors offer four recommendations for strengthening housing’s ability to fill that role: improve data collection, sharing and evaluation; improve budgetary coordination and funding experimentation; experiment with different models to organize and manage housing-based services; and strengthen housing-health partnerships.   • According to newly released Commerce Department data, building permits declined 5.7 percent and new housing starts dropped 7 percent in February to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.23 million. The data also show that single-family starts increased 2.9 percent to 902,000 units, and multi-family homebuilding fell 26.1 percent to 334,000 units, the lowest level since September 2017. In addition, permits for the construction of single family homes and multi-family buildings dropped by 0.6 and 14.8 percent, respectively. (The Wall Street Journal, March 16)
