ProJo: R.I.’s median house price rises by 10 percent in first quarter

Rhode Island was ranked as one of the country’s least affordable housing markets in March, while in the first quarter of 2018, the state’s median house price jumped by 10 percent, rising to $252,250. “Though Rhode Island’s housing market has not yet hit the peak reached before the housing downturn, strong price gains are affecting affordability, particularly among first-time home buyers,” the Rhode Island Association of Realtors said in its first-quarter market report, released Wednesday.

Providence American: Reed Announces Nearly $153K to Help RI Veterans Find Homes

In an effort to provide essential housing and support for homeless veterans, U.S. Senator Jack Reed today announced that the Providence, North Providence, Pawtucket, Tiverton, Bristol, and West Warwick Housing Authorities will receive a total of $152,775 in federal funding to assist homeless veterans through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program. While the Providence and North Providence Housing Authorities have previously received HUD-VASH vouchers, the Pawtucket, Tiverton, Bristol and West Warwick Housing Authorities are all new recipients of the funding.

How gratifying to see the subject of homelessness addressed in The Providence Journal’s front-page lead (“Housing first,” news, April 18)! Even better, your article was positive, even optimistic, about finding housing solutions in our state. Crossroads, Goodwill and other social service organizations in Rhode Island are working hard to restore dignity, purpose and financial security to the many hundreds of our neighbors who struggle with housing, employment, health issues and social challenges.

In the federal Tax Cut and Jobs Act of 2017, there was a provision designed to encourage investment in low-income areas that will be designated as “opportunity zones.” The areas that will be named as opportunity zones will allow investors to qualify for tax incentives by reinvesting capital gains into qualified “opportunity funds” that will privately fund real estate projects, new businesses and startups, and the expansion of existing businesses.
