Enterprise: Community Developments: September 25

September 25, 2019

  • At the Urban Land Institute’s Fall Meeting in Washington, D.C. last week, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser discussed the ULI’s recent report on affordable housing in the District, and emphasized her goal to build 36,000 new units citywide. The Mayor stressed the need to build equitably across all parts of the city and ensure that all neighborhoods have a sufficient supply of affordable housing. Currently, some Wards and neighborhoods in the District have built less affordable housing than others—a symptom of the long-term impacts of exclusionary zoning policies and deed restrictions that resulted in patterns of housing segregation and racial wealth disparities that persist today. • “Undesign the Redline,” an exhibit put together by Enterprise and design studio Designing the WE, will be opening in Thomas Greene Park in Brooklyn, New York starting October 2.  The interactive exhibit explores the history and effects of redlining and other racially motivated policies, and how we can come together to undesign these systems with intentionality. (AM New York, September 24)
