Workshop Series: Creating Affordable Homes in Your Community

Event Date: June 25, 2010 - 9:30 am

The availability of safe, quality affordable homes for Rhode Islanders is a vital component of our state's economy. As many communities work to achieve their affordable housing goals, many questions may still exist - What defines affordable homes, how do they fit in with my community, where can I obtain data regarding my community's housing needs, and more. Across Rhode Island, members of Affordable Housing Committees, Municipal Planners, developers and others are working to address these 'nuts and bolts' issues.

In response, HousingWorks RI has teamed up with Grow Smart RI, Rhode Island Housing, the Housing Network of Rhode Island, the Corporation for Supportive Housing, and the Rhode Island Housing Resources Commission to offer a series of four workshops designed to provide participants with specific skills and information to help them work more effectively.

At the first workshop, entitled How to Build Support, participants will learn essential tools for promoting affordable homes, including:

    * How to coordinate their affordable housing commission's work with their community's local comprehensive planning and land-use regulatory process

    * Where to obtain current data about local and state housing needs

    * The latest polling information about Rhode Islander's continued strong support for affordable housing

    * How to talk about the many benefits of affordable homes

This initial workshop will be held on Friday, June 25 from 9:30 am - 12:30 pm.

The next three workshops will include information about housing design that fits Rhode Island communities, how to finance affordable homes, and how to market affordable homes and fair housing considerations.
