PBN: Nonprofits receive federal money for housing
Published on July 13, 2010
An online article in the Providence Business News announced that several Rhode Island nonprofit organizations will receive $6.2 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to construct or renovate housing for low-income residents.
The article quoted Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I. “This federal funding will help create construction and renovation jobs, while also increasing and preserving affordable housing opportunities for Rhode Islanders,” he said. “This investment is a lifeline for many elderly and disabled citizens. It provides affordable, assisted housing and supportive services for those who are most in need and helps them live a more independent and productive lifestyle.”
The Women’s Development Corp. will receive $3.2 million to build 20 one-bedroom apartments in South Kingstown for low-income seniors and to provide services to households with a disabled family member.
The ARC of Blackstone Valley will receive $1.7 million to purchase and renovate six apartments for people with disabilities.
In Pawtucket, Opportunities United and House of Hope Community Development will receive $934,000 in a capital advance to construct 10 apartments for people with disabilities.
