Crossroads Rhode Island breaks ground for affordable homes in North Kingstown
Published on August 18, 2010
On Monday, August 16, Crossroads Rhode Island broke ground for Kingstown Crossings, an affordable rental development in North Kingstown. The new affordable homes are being developed on a vacant parcel of land adjacent to former Navy housing that has provided homes to formerly homeless families.
When the first phase of development is complete, families currently living in the Navy housing will move into their new homes. Due to its poor condition - the current apartments contain lead paint and asbestos - the Navy housing will be demolished and new apartments will be built in their place. When complete, more than 100 formerly homeless and low-income families will call Kingstown Crossings home. The final phase of development includes the construction of a daycare facility and community center.
Of the $26 million total development cost, $2,500,000 was provided through the Building Homes Rhode Island program. Additonal funding sources include Rhode Island Housing, Bank Rhode Island and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston. Funding from the Neighborhood Opportunities Program will allow rents to be affordable for the low-wage families or those with disabilities living at Kingstown Crossings.
