The Munoz Family
Pawtucket
Hector Munoz bought a home in Pawtucket after taking a homebuyer education course with the Blackstone Valley Community Development Corporation (BVCAP). His wife runs a home daycare business out of the home.
"One day back in 2002, my wife asked me a very direct and tough question. She asked me for how long are we going to pay rent. And I wasn’t prepared… so what I did was I got prepared.
I went to BVCAP, and I asked them if they have a program where I can learn something about housing – how to get a house, how to ask questions, all the different steps to buy a house. They offered me this first-time homebuyers’ course. I attended these classes every Thursday for two hours, and at the end…you can see the results! We have a house, we have a home, and we love it.
I can see how proud my daughter feels when children tell her that they want to come to her house, they say, “Melissa, your house is beautiful.” And my wife has a home day care, and the children love to come here. I can see that this house has a very deep influence in her confidence. That’s the main thing that comes to my mind when people ask me in what way our life has changed. We can see how happy she is all the time.
Last week we came back from Colombia and when I went to my workplace, my director told me, “Hector, welcome home.” And to me, my house came to my mind. Home is Rhode Island, but home is also a piece of the state, and so when he said welcome home, my house came to my mind."
What home means to the Munoz family…confidence
