The Hill Family's Story

The Hill Family Ken and Erika Hill bought a home for their family in Providence after taking homebuyer education classes from the Woonsocket Neighborhood Development Corporation. "We were looking for a house for our three kids and my mother and father-in-law. Seven years ago, I bought a house for $75,000. I started looking now and I was flabbergasted. It’s well over $200,000 for a home now. For a young family like us, it’s hard to find anything that you can afford. And I don’t see anything getting better. I check the house prices and they’re still going up, and the income is not going up to match the housing. It’s hard right now. I was raised very family-oriented, and my wife as well. We wanted to make sure we had a place for her mother and father, because it’s hard for the elderly on a fixed income to rent. Regardless of whether you rent or buy, it’s getting harder and harder. We wanted to make sure we could help them out to get along in the world now. We wanted to be together and know that everybody was taken care of. We didn’t want to have to worry about anybody being evicted or having to move suddenly. We wanted to make sure we were all safe and secure. We’ve put a lot of work into the house already. The first thing I did was put up a fence, so we can leave the back door open and let the kids play outside. This is their dream home!"
