Kate's Story

Kate Dungan
Barrington

Kate is a hard-working veterinarian technician who lives at home with her parents.  While she’s grateful to have a spot in her childhood home, she’s ready to move on.

“I’m a veterinary technician at the Rhode Island Medical Center in Warwick.  I commute 45 minutes back and forth every day to my job, which I love so much, but unfortunately it doesn’t pay the rent.  Being 24, I’m looking for an apartment to live on my own because I’d like to move out and be independent, but it is extremely difficult to find affordable housing right now.  I’m looking for something that has safety, that’s nice, that speaks to me, but with the paying position I have, it’s just not working right now.

I found an apartment that I’m very interested in that is sort of in my realm of affordability.  It’s called Westfield Lofts in Providence.  I did my budget last night, and I’m $300 short of doing all my expenses and paying rent, so I have to find a second job.  So I’m still looking, but I’m going to be working on my days off and on the weekends, and I’ll be working 60 hours a week, to just be able to afford to eat and have my own apartment."

What home means to Kate...independence
