Providence Chamber of Commerce focuses on economic impact of housing costs
The impact of Rhode Island's housing crisis on local businesses was the focus of yesterday's Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce Business Over Easy Breakfast, sponsored by the United Way of Rhode Island.

Tony Maione, United Way president and CEO and HousingWorks RI co-chair, led a panel discussion which focused on the dramatic increase in housing costs over the past five years and the economic repercussions of the state's shortage of affordable homes.

Panelist William Hatfield, president of Bank of America - Rhode Island and a HousingWorks RI member, confirmed that businesses feel the impact of the crisis through increased labor costs and decreased productivity and that the private sector must join the effort in calling for solutions.  Other panelists included Office of Housing and Community Development chief Noreen Shawcross and HousingWorks RI acting director Ari Matusiak.

Rhode Island Kids Count to unveil annual Factbook April 3
Rhode Island Kids Count is known as the trusted source of information on the well-being of our state's children and families.  On April 3, from 9:00 a.m. - 9:45 a.m. at the Crowne Plaza Hotel at the Crossings in Warwick, Kids Count, a HousingWorks RI member, will hold its annual breakfast and unveil the 2006 Factbook.

"This year's findings emphasize again how important a quality, affordable home is to the health, well-being and development of Rhode Island children," said Elizabeth Burke Bryant, Rhode Island Kids Count executive director. "The shortage of affordable housing affects families across the state. Children who move frequently are more likely to repeat a grade in school, and children who live in crowded, substandard housing are at increased risk for health problems which affect their ability to learn. We need to work together to address this critical children's issue."
