HousingWorks Policy Platform hearings planned for next week
Come show your support for the HousingWorks Policy Platform.  The House Finance Committee will hear the package in Room 35 this Tuesday, May 3, and the Senate Finance Committee will hold hearings in Room 211 on Thursday, May 5.  Both hearings are at 4:30 p.m.   Showing up demonstrates your support and is extremely important to our efforts!

Towns give strong support to increasing Neighborhood Opportunities Program (NOP) funding
Councils in South Kingstown, Westerly and Providence voted overwhelmingly to adopt a resolution calling on their state legislators and Governor Carcieri to support an increase in NOP funding from $5 million to $7.5 million.  Click to see House Bill 5175 and Senate Bill 651.  Declarations of support have been signed by Smithfield, Bristol and Jamestown.

Why the strong support?  Because the increase in funding will:

  • Expand a program that has helped create over 600 additional, attractive, affordable homes throughout the state in just five years;
  • Fund housing for minimum-wage workers like store clerks and waitresses;
  • Produce permanent supportive housing for persons with disabilities;
  • Leverage millions of additional federal and private dollars;
  • Create jobs and revenue for the state, and;
  • Positively change the lives of those who live in the homes!

Affordable housing = good design
Come see how affordable housing and good design add up to create attractive, safe communities.  A series of workshops – “Best Practices in Affordable Housing Design“ will bring together national and local experts for lively discussions on design and affordable housing. These interactive workshops will take place on May 5, 12 and 17 from 5:15 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.

Come see an affordable housing solution
Tiverton-based HealingHomes invites you to view its modular-built master bedroom suite designed to attach to existing homes.  The units are designed to help families struggling with the issues of caring for elderly or disabled loved ones who want to remain independent.  Come to an open house on Friday, May 6, beginning at 11 a.m.  The unit is on display in the parking lot of Elmhurst Extended Care at Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence.
