HousingWorks’ legislative briefings underway
HousingWorks is briefing legislators about its 2005 Policy Platform over the next three weeks. The Platform builds on the progress of the last two years and calls for a modest – but crucial – $4 million increase in Rhode Island’s investment in housing.

Grow Smart Rhode Island documents Historic Preservation Investment Tax Credit benefits
A new study commissioned by HousingWorks’ member Grow Smart Rhode Island concludes that the state Historic Preservation Investment Tax Credit is generating employment and housing, while leveraging substantial private investment that otherwise would not occur.
1,699 residential units are being created in the 111 projects analyzed, with 409 designated as affordable, according to the nine-page study.
In addition, the state’s multi-year investment in the tax credit, estimated at $145.47 million, generated a total of $795.25 million in economic activity.
Overflow crowd of housing professionals, advocates enjoys discussion on innovative affordable housing design
More than 100 town planners, builders, housing advocates, academics and others, previewed a broad range of innovative affordable housing design strategies from RISD earlier this month at The Rhode Island Foundation.
City-State --The Urban Design Lab at RISD, in association with HousingWorks’ members Housing Network of Rhode Island and Grow Smart Rhode Island, offered a glimpse into how affordable housing can fit positively into Rhode Island’s growing housing landscape. Design strategies for affordable housing in rural, suburban and urban environments were presented.
