ProJo: VW settlement money speeds environmental projects in R.I.

One big winner is Sabin Point Park, in East Providence, which has been awarded $850,000 for work that one day may allow the beach to reopen for swimming.

EAST PROVIDENCE — It’s been so long since swimming was last allowed at Sabin Point Park that city officials can’t say when it was.

“None of us can remember,” Diane Feather, acting city planner for East Providence, said while walking through the park on Narragansett Bay. “We’ve tried to research it, but we don’t know.”

This stretch of the Riverside shoreline was a former summer colony, a onetime home to amusement parks and beach cottages, yet it’s probably been close to a century since anyone swam from the crescent of sand near the end of Shore Road.

But with the upper Bay cleaner than it’s been in decades, the city, state agencies and the environmental group Save The Bay have gradually been taking care of drainage and runoff problems as they work towards reopening the little beach.
