Newport Daily News: Project to turn former Cranston-Calvert school into apartments gets first OK

NEWPORT — A developer hoping to convert the former Cranston-Calvert school into an apartment building that is affordable for working young professionals received some positive action by the Planning Board on Monday night

The board recommended the City Council change the city’s zoning ordinance to accommodate the project, as requested by the Newport Project Development Co., but said the zoning amendment should apply to all city-owned properties including other vacant schools like Coggeshall School.

Board members said applying the zoning change only to the Cranston-Calvert building would be an example of “spot zoning,” which the board wants to avoid under the city’s new comprehensive land-use plan that was approved by the state in 2017.

The requested zoning change would allow the apartments to be constructed without the developer needing to petition the city Zoning Board of Approval for variances or a special-use permit.
