House sales increased in Rhode Island for the fifth consecutive year in 2017, creating a “hot” market despite falling inventory, according to the Rhode Island Association of Realtors.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said that “life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?” The Woonsocket Martin Luther King Community Committee and NeighborWorks Blackstone River Valley were doing their part to answer that question Saturday at St. James Baptist Church on South Main Street, where more than 30 volunteers young and old kicked off a year-long service project repurposing old newspaper boxes into mini-food pantries called Blessing Boxes.

Carmen Catalan says she couldn’t be happier to be home for the holidays this year. She and her family settled into a newly renovated affordable housing unit at 39-41 Knight St. in Central Falls on Dec. 1.

A playground for an elementary school in South Providence, downtown revitalization in Woonsocket, and a new continuing-education center in Central Falls were among the projects that won support in the first round of awards from the $10-million urban revitalization/blight relief fund approved by state voters in 2016 as part of the $50-million affordable housing bond.

Tenants will move in Friday to the first completed building in the 46-unit Branch Blackstone affordable housing development, a renovated three-family home at 39-41 Knight St.
